Dr. Christopher Burke is a Principal Research Fellow at the University of Reading within the Department of Typography & Graphic Communication. His work focuses on the history of typography and graphic design in the 20th century, particularly the development of modernism in typography and its connections to broader modern culture. He has extensively examined the technological revolution in type design and its paradoxical revival of traditionalist styles.
Current research centers on the picture language of Isotype, exploring its origins in 1920s Vienna and adaptation to British contexts post-1940. This work, supported by the Austrian Science Fund, intersects with philosophy, economics, and information design. Key publications include History and Legacy of Isotype (2024) and Soft Propaganda, Special Relationships, and a New Democracy (2022), co-authored with Wim Jansen.
His scholarship reveals Isotype's interdisciplinary reach, particularly through Otto Neurath's polymathic influence. Articles span topics like German hybrid typefaces, Willy Wiegand's luxury printing, and the cultural politics of Futura during the interwar period. Collaborative projects include editing the Isotype: Design and Contexts series and analyzing the linguistic status of Isotype.
