Dr. Emmeline Howarth is a Lecturer in Animal Welfare Science and Programme Leader for the Animal Behaviour BSc at the University of Chester, School of Natural Sciences. She holds a PhD in Biological Anthropology from Liverpool John Moores University, an MSc in Applied Animal Behaviour and Welfare from the University of Edinburgh, and a BSc in Animal Science from Newcastle University. Her research focuses on validating attention bias as a welfare assessment tool for captive primates and companion animals, with recent work exploring genetic influences on social attention in macaques and the impact of exercise on explosives detection dogs.

Research Interests: Dr. Howarth’s work centers on non-invasive welfare assessment techniques, particularly attention bias in primates, and expanding into companion animal welfare. She investigates genetic correlates of behavior, zoo animal management, and the ethical implications of animal training practices.
Teaching & Supervision: She leads modules on animal welfare ethics, behavior, and human-animal interaction at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Currently supervises projects on hedgehog conservation, microplastics and dog welfare, and social networks in captive Bactrian camels.
Awards: Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (2023).
Professional Activities: Organizing Committee member for the School of Natural Sciences Research Conference (2023–present), journal reviewer for PLoS ONE and Communications Biology.
