Dr. Mary Blanchard is a Lecturer at the School of Biosciences, University of Birmingham. She specializes in primate locomotor behavior and ecology, with extensive fieldwork in Madagascar and contributions to captive conservation in the UK. Her research integrates biomechanical analysis with habitat studies to improve understanding of primate movement and welfare.
Education: BSc (Hons) in Oceanography & Geology from University of Southampton; MSc in Early Hominid Studies from University of Liverpool; PhD in Lemur locomotor behaviour from University of Liverpool (1999–2000s).
Research interests include wild primate locomotion, arboreal predator interactions, and applying locomotion insights to captive welfare and habitat conservation. Recent work focuses on lemurs (e.g., Lepilemur, Propithecus) and tarsiers, emphasizing biomechanics and habitat adaptation.
She is a council member of the Primate Society of Great Britain (PSGB), serving as Membership Secretary and Archivist. Her publications span peer-reviewed articles and encyclopedic contributions on primate behavior and conservation.
No scientific awards explicitly listed. Teaching includes animal behavior, human evolution, and marine environment modules. Grants include Leverhulme funding for post-doctoral research. No labs/teams explicitly mentioned beyond institutional affiliations.
