Professor Carri Westgarth is Chair in Human-Animal Interaction at the University of Liverpool, affiliated with the Institute of Infection, Veterinary and Ecological Sciences and the Livestock and One Health department. She is an expert in human-animal interactions, companion animal welfare, and veterinary epidemiology.
Her research spans dog walking and physical activity, childhood development and pet ownership, dog bite prevention, overseas rescue dogs, canine obesity and aging, and responsible dog ownership. She leads the cross-faculty seminar series CHAIR (Connecting Human-Animal Interaction Research) and co-founded the Merseyside Dog Safety Partnership.
Recent publications include work on aging dogs, child development outcomes, and mental health impacts of pet ownership. She is also a Full Member of the Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors and received the Early Career Scholar Award from the International Society for Anthrozoology (2018).
She teaches veterinary epidemiology, the human-animal bond, and companion animal welfare at the University of Liverpool and Liverpool John Moores University, and supervises undergraduate and postgraduate research projects.
