Iben Meyer is an Assistant Professor and Guest Researcher in the Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences at the University of Copenhagen's Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, specializing in the Animal Welfare and Disease Control section. Her work integrates clinical veterinary practice with academic research to advance understanding of companion animal welfare.
She holds a cand.med.vet. (veterinary degree) and a PhD in ethology. From 2014 to 2022, she operated a veterinary behaviour service while teaching clinical ethology to veterinary students. Since March 2022, she has served full-time as an assistant professor and has been course responsible for continuing education in companion animal behaviour for veterinary technicians in 2021 and 2024.
Dr. Meyer's research centers on canine ethology, investigating behaviour problems, human-dog dynamics, and welfare implications of ownership practices. Her interdisciplinary approach bridges veterinary medicine, sociology, and animal behavior science to address real-world challenges in companion animal care.
Analysis of her 2021-2024 publications reveals consistent focus on dog behaviour problems through epidemiological surveys of Danish owners. Key themes include prevalence assessment, risk factor identification (e.g., reduced off-leash time and social interaction), socioeconomic influences on ownership, and welfare trade-offs in companion animal lifestyles. Her work demonstrates strong methodological rigor in population-based studies.
She actively disseminates knowledge through 11 lectures and oral contributions at events like the European Veterinary Congress, and has engaged with 21 media outlets including podcasts, radio interviews, and scientific blogs to translate research for public and professional audiences. Her collaborations with researchers like B. Forkman and P. Sandøe extend across veterinary behavior and welfare domains.
Dr. Meyer contributes to policy development through the Center for Research in Farm Animal Welfare (CFFV), providing expert testimony on legislation affecting animals, such as fireworks regulations. Her work exemplifies the integration of academic research with practical applications in veterinary practice and animal welfare advocacy.
