Björn Forkman is a Professor in the Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences at the University of Copenhagen's Faculty of Health Sciences (formerly the Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University of Denmark). His academic career spans institutions including the Agricultural University in Sweden, the Roslin Institute in Edinburgh, Scotland, and his current position at the University of Copenhagen.
Dr. Forkman was trained as a biologist at Lund University and earned his PhD in Ethology from Stockholm University. His research has evolved from fundamental studies of animal behavior mechanisms to a strong focus on animal welfare assessment and improvement.
His research interests primarily include animal welfare science, ethology, applied animal behavior, with specific expertise in dog behavior, pig welfare assessment technologies, and dairy cattle welfare systems across European countries. His work bridges fundamental behavioral science with practical welfare applications in various production and companion animal settings.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals a consistent focus on developing objective welfare assessment methods, understanding human-animal interactions (particularly with dogs), and comparative studies of welfare standards across different production systems and regulatory frameworks in Europe.

Dr. Forkman has received funding from diverse sources including the Swedish Kennel Club and the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration. He has collaborated extensively with industry partners through industrial PhD programs with SEGES and Copenhagen Zoo, as well as with various animal welfare NGOs. His work demonstrates strong integration between academic research and practical animal welfare applications in both production and companion animal contexts.
He maintains active research networks across Europe and participates in professional organizations including SOAR (since 2005), contributing to the advancement of animal welfare science through conference presentations, committee work, and editorial roles.
