Dr Ellen Williams is a Lecturer in Animal Behaviour & Welfare at Harper Adams University, specializing in zoo animal welfare and ethology. She holds a BSc (Hons), MSc, PhD, and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). Her research focuses on mitigating zoo environmental impacts on animal welfare, with particular expertise in elephants and carnivores.
Dr Williams teaches modules including Philosophy of Zoos, Behavioural Methodologies, and Animal Welfare Ethics. She is a member of key organizations such as the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums Research Committee, EAZA Animal Welfare Working Group, and International Society for Applied Ethology (ISAE). Her advisory roles include ISAE Ethics Committee membership and EAZA Animal Welfare Instructor.
Her research interests emphasize zoo animal welfare assessment tools, visitor effects, and aging impacts. Recent work explores harness design for dogs, Asian elephant personality, and post-COVID zoo animal behavior. She has published extensively on zoo management, enrichment strategies, and captive animal needs.
