Dr. Emily Watkins is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Roehampton's School of Life and Health Sciences, Centre for Integrated Research in Life and Health Sciences. She joined the university in September 2019 and teaches undergraduate and postgraduate modules in Sport and Exercise Science, serving as module convener for Fundamentals of Exercise Physiology (L1) and Limitations of Performance and Training (L3).
Her educational background includes:
- PhD in Environmental Physiology from the University of Brighton (2014-2018)
- BSc (Hons) in Sport and Exercise Science from the University of Brighton (2011-2014)
Dr. Watkins' research focuses on the physiological consequences of occupational demands, particularly in firefighting and exercise performed in extremely hot environments. Her work examines systemic inflammation in fire service instructors, the association between exposure types and contaminants, cardiac event risk, and the impact of the menstrual cycle and menopause on heat tolerance. Her publications demonstrate a strong emphasis on translating research into practical applications for firefighter health and safety.
Her scholarly contributions show consistent productivity with 16 research outputs between 2017-2025, including high-impact publications that have been referenced in policy sources and Wikipedia pages. Her work on women firefighters' health has received particular attention in both academic and public spheres.
Dr. Watkins is an active professional member of The Physiological Society and has contributed significantly through:
- 13 public speaking engagements
- 5 publication peer-reviews
- 5 invited talks for academic audiences
- 3 committee memberships
Her research has practical implications, most notably in the development of a Heat Illness Awareness and Prevention Training Course. She supervises PhD students Alex Rhodes and Christopher Wolfe, continuing to advance knowledge in firefighter physiology and occupational health.
