Kate Donnan is a Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Psychology at the University of Hull, affiliated with the School of Sport Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences and the Sport Health and Exercise Science (SHES) research group. She holds a BSc (Hons) in Sport and Exercise Science from the University of Brighton (2014), an MSc in Applied Sport Physiology (2015), and a PhD from Leeds Beckett University (2020), focusing on heat exposure and exercise impacts on cognitive function in team sports.
Her research explores psychobiological effects of extreme environments (e.g., heat, fatigue) on athletes' cognitive performance and decision-making, extending to occupational settings like emergency services. Key themes include heat stress mitigation strategies, fatigue management, and nutritional/psychological interventions for performance optimization. She currently leads modules in Research Methods, Social Psychology of Sport, and Applied Sport Psychology, and supervises postgraduate students including E. Cole’s work on short-term heat acclimation for older populations.
Donnan co-leads the Supporting Workplace Return after Breast Cancer project (£101k grant from Breast Cancer Now) and collaborates with Football Manager’s Women’s NPL as a Head Researcher. Her work bridges applied sport science with real-world occupational challenges, emphasizing evidence-based solutions for physical and cognitive performance under stress.
