Paul Ansdell is an Assistant Professor in Exercise Physiology at Northumbria University. He holds a Ph.D. from Northumbria University (2020) and completed his undergraduate and master's degrees at the University of Brighton. His research focuses on how age, sex, and hormonal status influence physiological function in health and disease.
Dr. Ansdell's research group includes postgraduate students, Ph.D. candidates, and postdoctoral researchers, funded by the BBSRC, MS Society, and industry partners. His work examines topics such as menstrual cycle and menopause effects on central nervous system function, sex differences in exercise physiology, and neuromuscular adaptations.
He teaches on the BSc Sport and Exercise Science and MSc Strength and Conditioning programs, covering modules like Fundamentals of Human Physiology and Physiology of Strength and Conditioning. His leadership roles include co-leading the Women's Sport and Wellbeing Interdisciplinary Research Theme and serving as Theme Lead for Human, Environmental, and Exercise Physiology in the Physiological Society.
Recent publications highlight his focus on neuromuscular function, hormonal influences on exercise performance, and post-COVID-19 exercise capacity. His work bridges basic science and applied physiology, addressing gender-specific physiological mechanisms and their clinical implications.
