Dr. Emily Don is a Senior Lecturer in Vertebrate Physiology at Macquarie University's School of Natural Sciences, within the Faculty of Science and Engineering. She specializes in neurodegenerative disease research using zebrafish models and has a strong focus on biomedical science education. Her PhD from the University of Sydney's Department of Anatomy and Histology explored limb development genetics in zebrafish. Since 2013, she has contributed to motor neuron disease research at Macquarie University's Motor Neuron Disease Research Centre. She also leads teaching initiatives, including directing the Bachelor of Medical Sciences program and convening courses like Systems Physiology and Advanced Human Physiology.
Dr. Don has held leadership roles such as Director of the Bachelor of Medical Sciences and member of the School of Natural Sciences Education Committee. Her research involves developing molecular toolkits for zebrafish models to study nervous system aging and neurodegenerative pathologies. She has supervised multiple graduate students and contributed to projects like 'Research in relation to a cure for motor neuron disease (MND)'. Her engagement includes roles in academic networks like the FMHHS EnCouRage network and the Australia and New Zealand Cell and Developmental Biology society.
Her research outputs span neurodegenerative mechanisms, autophagy, and zebrafish model applications. Awards include the Biomedical Sciences Early Career Research Award (2017) and multiple presentation accolades. She actively examines theses and contributes to academic governance committees.
