Maxinne Watchon is a Postdoctoral Researcher at Macquarie University's Motor Neuron Disease Research Centre within the Macquarie Medical School. Her research focuses on neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Machado-Joseph Disease (MJD), using transgenic zebrafish models to investigate disease mechanisms and test therapeutic compounds. She holds a PhD from the University of Sydney (2014-2018) and completed a Graduate Diploma in Science (2013) and a Bachelor of Medical Science (2010-2012).
- Education:
- Bachelor of Medical Science, University of Sydney (2010-2012)
- Graduate Diploma in Science, University of Sydney (2013)
- Doctor of Philosophy, University of Sydney (2014-2018)
Research interests include autophagy pathways, protein quality control mechanisms, and neurodegenerative disease modeling. Her work emphasizes translational strategies for MJD and related ataxias.
Awards include the Early- and Mid-Career Research Award (2021), ECR Small Grant (2019), and travel awards for MJD research conferences. She collaborates on projects involving neuroprotective therapies and disease mechanism exploration.
Her lab affiliation is the Motor Neuron Disease Research Centre, where she continues to study MJD under Dr. Angela Laird's supervision. Future work aims to advance therapeutic strategies using zebrafish models and autophagy modulation.
