Emeran A. Mayer is a Professor of Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine, University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). His research focuses on the neurobiology of functional gastrointestinal disorders, particularly the gut-brain axis and microbiome interactions. He leads investigations into irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), chronic pain, and the bidirectional communication between the central nervous system and gastrointestinal tract. Mayer's work integrates neuroimaging, microbiomics, and clinical studies to understand how psychological, neural, and microbial factors influence gastrointestinal health and disease.
Key contributions include identifying brain structural and functional changes associated with chronic pain syndromes, the role of early life adversity in gut-brain axis dysregulation, and the development of multi-omics approaches to study IBS subtypes. He collaborates with the Multidisciplinary Approach to the Study of Chronic Pelvic Pain (MAPP) Network and has pioneered studies on microbiome-brain interactions in autism spectrum disorder and obesity.
Mayer's research highlights sex differences in chronic pain mechanisms, stress effects on visceral sensitivity, and the therapeutic potential of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in modulating brain-gut-microbiome pathways. His work emphasizes translational applications, including biomarker discovery and personalized medicine strategies for gastrointestinal and mental health disorders.
