Ann Ouyang is a Professor and Vice Chair of Faculty Promotion and Mentoring in the Department of Medicine, with a leadership role as Director of Motility in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. Her expertise bridges clinical practice and research in gastrointestinal motility and functional disorders.
- Education: Gastroenterology Fellowship at Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (1978–1980).
- Education: Internal Medicine Residency at Pennsylvania Hospital (1975–1978).
Her research focuses on functional bowel disorders, intestinal motility, and brain-gut axis interactions, supported by NIH and AGA grants. Recent work explores genetic influences on visceral pain (SCN10A polymorphism), neural mechanisms (NaV1.8 sodium channels), and rheumatological conditions affecting gut function (e.g., scleroderma, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome).
Ann’s publications reveal a thematic emphasis on visceral pain mechanisms, molecular pharmacology, and interdisciplinary medical education. Her clinical studies leverage high-resolution manometric data to improve diagnosis of esophageal disorders.
Key funded projects include NIH/NCRR grants on anorectal function, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), and gestational diabetes in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) patients. She also received HRSA support in 2004.
