Susanna Walter is an Adjunct Professor at Linköping University, affiliated with the Department of Biomedical and Clinical Sciences (BKV) and the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. Her research focuses on the brain-gut-microbiome axis, particularly in patients with functional bowel disorders and visceral pain. She collaborates with the clinical neurogastroenterology team at Linköping University Hospital to study gut permeability, brain alterations, and biomarkers in neurogastroenterology. Her work spans interdisciplinary projects involving clinicians, neuroscientists, and preclinical researchers. Key areas include understanding how peripheral gut changes relate to brain structural and functional changes, with a focus on irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), diverticulosis, and colonic mucosal barrier function.
Dr. Walter is part of the Mucosa Infection and Inflammation Center (MIIC) and the Center for Systems Neurobiology. Her research group, 'Gut Feelings,' investigates interactions between gut health and neurological outcomes. Her studies often explore stress effects on gut permeability, mast cell activity, and neurotransmitter levels in relation to symptomatology. Recent work includes evaluating postbiotic therapies for IBS and studying genetic associations with stool frequency and IBS susceptibility.
Dr. Walter’s research also addresses clinical aspects of anorectal dysfunction post-surgery, fecal incontinence management, and quality-of-life impacts of gastrointestinal symptoms. Her interdisciplinary approach bridges basic science (e.g., enteric glial cell studies) with translational applications (e.g., biomarker development).
