Elsbeth Walker is a Professor of Biology at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Her research focuses on plant metal homeostasis, particularly iron and transition metals, with applications to biofortification. She holds a B.A. from Mount Holyoke College (1984) and a Ph.D. from the Rockefeller University (1989), followed by postdoctoral work at Yale University (1990–1993).
Her research interests include iron transport mechanisms in plants, signaling pathways for iron deficiency, and the role of YSL transporters in metal allocation to seeds and shoots. Key projects involve maize (Zea mays), Arabidopsis thaliana, and Taxus spp. for understanding phloem-mediated signaling and metabolic engineering of secondary metabolites like paclitaxel.
Her work bridges basic plant biology and applied agriculture, aiming to improve crop nutritional quality. The Walker Lab (linked via her faculty page) actively studies YSL gene families, OPT3-mediated copper transport, and long-distance metal signaling. Recent studies highlight roles for small RNAs and lncRNAs in iron deficiency responses.
Affiliations include the Department of Biology and participation in the Plant Biology and Molecular & Cellular Biology Graduate Programs. Her lab’s research has implications for global nutrition through biofortification strategies targeting iron-deficient diets.
