Elke Mühlberger, Ph.D., is a Professor of Virology, Immunology & Microbiology at the Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine. She holds affiliations with the National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories (NEIDL), Center for Regenerative Medicine (CReM), and the Genome Science Institute. Her research focuses on highly pathogenic RNA viruses such as Ebola and Marburg viruses, studying viral genome replication, host immune responses, and antiviral therapeutic development.
Dr. Mühlberger's work utilizes advanced platforms like iPSC-derived human cells to model filovirus infections. She has led over 30 NIH-funded grants, including projects on henipavirus pathogenesis, BSL-4 virus inactivation protocols, and filovirus immune evasion mechanisms. Her lab collaborates with tissue engineers to develop innovative infection models and has pioneered reverse genetics tools for studying emerging viruses.
Her research has generated 138+ publications, with recent studies addressing Lloviu virus ecology, SARS-CoV-2 host interactions, and antiviral drug discovery. She serves as a mentor in the Graduate Medical Sciences Program and has advised numerous trainees in viral immunology and biosafety research. Key facilities include the NEIDL and CReM labs, where her team explores next-generation antiviral strategies and viral pathogenicity.
