Elizabeth Smith is a Professor in the Department of Politics and International Affairs at Furman University, serving as Assistant Faculty Director of The Cothran Center for Vocational Reflection and a Faculty Council At-Large Representative. With 15 years of experience at Furman, her roles emphasize teaching, research, and institutional leadership. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota (as a National Science Foundation Fellow) and a B.A. in Political Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she was a Morehead Scholar and graduated with highest distinction.
Her research focuses on women and politics, political socialization, public opinion, and political science education. Notable works include the book *Political Science Research Methods In Practice* (co-authored with Akan Malici) and publications in journals like *Polity* and *Political Psychology*. She actively integrates sustainability into curricula and explores the impact of civic engagement through service-learning.
Dr. Smith has been honored with the 2007 Excellence in Teaching Award, the YWCA Dream Achiever Award, and the Greenville Literacy Association Community Service Award. Her grants include funding from the National Science Foundation, the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues, and Furman's Research and Professional Growth programs.
Her advising and grants span topics like young women's political ambition, teacher professional development, and civic education. She collaborates with educators to improve government course design and supports interdisciplinary approaches to political discourse.
