Elizabeth Neiman is an Associate Professor in the Department of English at the University of Maine and Director of the Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies program. Her research focuses on British Romanticism, feminist theory, and the history of the novel, emphasizing gendered and racialized dimensions of empathy in literary works. She co-edits special journal issues and publishes on topics ranging from 18th/19th-century authors to contemporary gender discourse. Her first book, Minerva’s Gothics: the Politics and Poetics of Romantic Exchange (2019), recontextualizes Romantic-era novelists within canonical literary discussions. Current projects explore women writers’ critiques of empathy’s societal implications. She teaches courses in Romanticism, Victorian literature, feminist/queer theory, and cross-listed WGS courses analyzing contemporary women-authored literature through intersectional frameworks.
Publications span academic journals like Eighteenth-Century Fiction and Women’s Writing, as well as public-facing articles in the Bangor Daily News addressing gender issues. Neiman’s editorial work includes co-editing special journal issues on the Minerva Press and co-authoring editions of Romantic-era texts. Her interdisciplinary approach bridges literary analysis with social theory, emphasizing how literature reflects and challenges cultural norms around gender and empathy.
