Anne K. Mellor is a Distinguished Professor of English and Women’s Studies at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). She holds a B.A. from Brown University (1963), M.A. (1964) and Ph.D. (1968) in English and Comparative Literature from Columbia University. Her research focuses on 18th- and 19th-century British literature, women’s writing, feminist theory, art history, and sexuality studies, with particular emphasis on the Romantic era. She has significantly contributed to redefining literary canons through works like British Literature 1780-1830 and Mothers of the Nation – Women’s Political Writing in England.
Professor Mellor’s awards include the Keats-Shelley Association Distinguished Scholar Award, two Guggenheim Fellowships, and UCLA’s Distinguished Teaching Award. Her edited collections such as Romanticism and Feminism pioneered feminist critiques of Romantic-era texts. She has held prestigious fellowships from the NEH, ACLS, Rockefeller Foundation, and Australian National University. Her work bridges literary analysis with interdisciplinary approaches, exploring intersections between art, politics, and gender.
Her research also engages postcolonial theory and visual culture, reflected in studies like Romanticism and Gender. She maintains active involvement in UCLA’s academic community, teaching and mentoring students in English literature and gender studies.
