Jasper Cragwall

Jasper Cragwall is an Associate Professor and Undergraduate Programs Director in the Department of English at Loyola University Chicago. He holds a BA from Carleton College (2000) and an MA/PhD from Princeton University (2007). His scholarship centers on British Romanticism, exploring religious influences on literary culture and the secularization process. Key works include Lake Methodism: Polite Literature and Popular Religion in England, 1780-1830 (2013), which recontextualizes Romantic tropes within Methodist movements, and an upcoming project on natural religion and secularization.

Research interests include poetic form, religious history, and the evolution of secular thought. His articles analyze figures like Wordsworth and the Shelleys, interrogating how religious frameworks shaped literary identity. Currently, he investigates tensions between natural religion and modern secularism through Romantic-era literature.
