Elina Oinas serves as Professor and Vice-Rector at the University of Helsinki, holding a prominent position within the Swedish School of Social and Community Studies. She directs multiple research initiatives including the Helsinki Inequality Initiative (INEQ), Institute of Sustainability Science (HELSUS), and Institute for Urban Studies (Urbaria). Her leadership extends to supervising three doctoral programs: Social Sciences, Gender/Culture/Society Studies, and Political/Social/Regional Change.
Professor Oinas's research spans critical sociology with particular focus on Nordic welfare states, gender studies, and Africa-focused scholarship. Her work examines power dynamics, transnationalism, and social inequality through innovative theoretical frameworks that bridge European and African contexts. She has developed significant expertise in studying Swedish-speaking Finland, racial dynamics, and the emotional dimensions of social positioning.
Her publication record demonstrates consistent scholarly output with 61 research outputs documented, including recent work on human-microbe relations, reflexivity in education, and racial discourse. Oinas actively leads major collaborative projects including the WIRE project (2020-2024) examining Finland-Africa research collaborations, establishing the Africa Research Forum, and creating Black History Month initiatives at the University of Helsinki.
Professor Oinas holds significant leadership roles including membership on the board of the International Sociological Association (2024-2027) and maintains active international collaborations, with an upcoming academic visit to Addis Ababa University's Gender Studies department in February 2025. Her academic journey includes docent appointments at both University of Turku (2010) and Åbo Akademi University (2007), as well as life membership at Cambridge University's Clare Hall College since November 2022.
