Juho Luukkonen

Juho Luukkonen is a University Lecturer at the Department of Geosciences and Geography within the Faculty of Science at the University of Helsinki. He is affiliated with multiple research organizations including the Helsinki Institute of Sustainability Science (HELSUS), Helsinki Inequality Initiative (INEQ), and Helsinki Institute of Urban and Regional Studies (Urbaria). His academic work focuses on social and economic geography, with particular emphasis on state theory, territorial politics, and urban governance.

Dr. Luukkonen serves as a supervisor for doctoral programmes in multiple disciplines including the Doctoral Programme in School, Education, Society, and Culture; the Doctoral Programme in Political, Societal and Regional Change; and the Doctoral Programme in Atmospheric Sciences. His research output spans from 2007 to the present, with a particularly productive period since 2015.

Among his notable achievements is the PLANNING THOUGHT AWARD received in 2014, recognizing significant contributions to planning theory.

Dr. Luukkonen actively contributes to the academic community through peer review for journals such as Political Geography, Journal of Common Market Studies, and Geographical Society of Finland publications. He has organized events like the Human Geography lecture series and presented his research at international conferences. His media contributions demonstrate engagement with public discourse on urban policy, regional development, and housing issues in Finland.
