Anja Nygren is Professor of Global Development Studies at the University of Helsinki, where she serves as Director of the Doctoral Programme in Political, Societal and Regional Change. She holds affiliations with the Helsinki Inequality Initiative (INEQ) and Helsinki Institute of Sustainability Science (HELSUS), and is Adjunct Professor of Environmental Policy at the University of Helsinki and Political Ecology at the University of Tampere. Her research focuses on global extractivisms, oil conflicts, resource frontiers, political ecology, water vulnerability, and environmental justice in Latin America.

Her research bridges socionature dynamics, state-making, and resource politics, examining hydrocarbon extractivism, environmental justice, and urban planning in Mexico, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Indonesia. She leads major projects funded by the Academy of Finland, EU Nordface/Belmont Forum, and Kone Foundation, focusing on water governance, convivial conservation, and disaster vulnerability.
Recent publications analyze human-wildlife interactions, oil-related dispossession, and climate adaptation strategies. Her work appears in journals like Development and Change, World Development, and Journal of Peasant Studies. She has received multiple teaching awards, including the University of Helsinki's Award of Good Teaching (2011) and Excellent Thesis Supervisor (2006).
