Elena Sakkalou is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Psychology, Sport and Sensory Science at Anglia Ruskin University (ARU), within the Faculty of Science and Engineering. She specializes in developmental psychology, focusing on neurodevelopmental disorders and the impact of neurodisability on cognitive and social-communicative development in infants and children. Dr. Sakkalou holds a PhD in Psychology from Cardiff University and has extensive postdoctoral research experience at institutions like UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health, where she studied children with congenital visual impairment and autism.
Her research interests include typical child development, severe visual impairment, autism, intra-uterine growth restriction (IUGR), and environmental factors such as parent-infant interactions and parenting stress. She has contributed to developing early intervention programs and assessments, including the Developmental Journal for Visual Impairment. She is a member of the ARU Centre for Mind and Behaviour and actively collaborates with clinicians and academics in interdisciplinary projects.
Elena teaches modules such as 'Issues in Child Development,' 'Social and Developmental Psychology,' and 'Psychology in the Workplace.' Her publications span developmental medicine, clinical neurophysiology, and innovative research methodologies. She is also involved in organizing workshops through the Mary Kitzinger Trust to advance research in visual impairment and developmental difficulties.
