Elena Sakkalou is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Psychology, Sport and Sensory Science within the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Anglia Ruskin University (ARU), specializing in infant and child development with emphasis on neurodisability and neurodevelopmental disorders. She joined ARU in 2019 after extensive research at UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health.
Her academic qualifications include:

- MSc in Research Methods in Psychology – University of Reading
- BSc in Psychology – Davidson College (USA)

She is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Her research examines cognitive and socio-communicative development in children with severe visual impairment, autism, and intrauterine growth restriction, investigating environmental impacts like parent-infant interactions and early intervention efficacy using behavioral and brain measures.
Analysis of her 2012-2019 publications reveals consistent focus on longitudinal studies of neurodevelopmental conditions, particularly visual impairment. Her work combines clinical collaboration with innovative methodologies like electronic diaries to track developmental trajectories, assess intervention outcomes, and measure parenting stress in vulnerable populations.
