Dr. Elena Mitsi holds dual roles as Senior Research Associate in the Oxford Vaccine Group at the University of Oxford and Senior Lecturer in Infection and Immunity at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine. Her primary affiliation is with Oxford's Department of Pediatrics.
Education: PhD (Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, 2020), MRes and BSc (University of Patras, Greece). Her doctoral research investigated nasal immunity's role in lung protection against bacterial and viral infections.
Research focuses on host-pathogen interactions, respiratory pathogen transmission dynamics, and the role of respiratory mucosal cellular reservoirs in immune protection. She leads immunology research for the Experimental Human Pneumococcal Challenge (EHPC) model and pioneered an RSV-pneumococcus Controlled Human Co-Infection Model to study lung diseases. These models enable investigation of infection dynamics and immune responses in respiratory systems.
Labs/Teams: Active contributor to the Oxford Vaccine Group and Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine's Infection and Immunity programs, driving translational research in respiratory infections.
