Hugh Adler is an Honorary Research Fellow at the Department of Clinical Sciences within the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine and a Specialty Trainee in Infectious Diseases at Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Trust. His work bridges clinical research and tropical medicine, focusing on pneumococcal colonization, antimicrobial resistance, and emerging infections like monkeypox.
- Education: Medicine at University College Dublin, followed by a diploma in tropical medicine and hygiene at LSTM.
Hugh's research centers on experimental human pneumococcal colonization (EHPC), expanding its application to older populations and refining its safety and immunological implications. He has contributed to understanding post-vaccination pneumococcal epidemiology and led studies on influenza-pneumococcus interactions. His clinical experience includes managing monkeypox cases and collaborating with the UK's High Consequence Infectious Diseases (HCID) network.
Hugh teaches on the DTM&H and MSc Tropical and Infectious Diseases programs. He has published extensively on pneumococcal dynamics, viral-bacterial co-infections, and monkeypox epidemiology, often working with interdisciplinary teams to address global health challenges.
Research Affiliations:
- Member of the Experimental Human Pneumococcal Carriage (EHPC) collaboration.
- Collaborated with the National HCID Network for monkeypox studies.
