Daniel Weinberger is Professor of Epidemiology (Microbial Diseases) at Yale School of Public Health and Co-director of the Public Health Modeling Concentration. He is also affiliated faculty with the Yale Institute for Global Health. His research focuses on the intersection of microbiology and epidemiology, particularly respiratory infections including pneumococcus, RSV, influenza, and Legionella.
Dr. Weinberger's research encompasses understanding biological drivers of rare pneumococcal serotypes following vaccine introduction, developing novel statistical approaches to evaluate vaccine impact, evaluating interactions among respiratory pathogens, and understanding environmental drivers of Legionellosis. His work employs both experimental and quantitative approaches. Key research collaborations include Virginia Pitzer, Joshua Warren, and other prominent researchers in infectious disease modeling.
His publications demonstrate a strong focus on respiratory infection dynamics, vaccine evaluation methods, and pathogen interactions. Recent work has explored RSV transmission patterns across age groups, viral interference effects on epidemic dynamics, and pneumococcal vaccine impacts during the pandemic era. His research has significant policy implications for vaccine implementation and respiratory disease control.

Dr. Weinberger teaches the Public Health Surveillance course at YSPH, which covers aberration detection, time series analysis, and spatial cluster detection using SAS or R. His work has received international exposure at WHO and PAHO meetings, and he has provided technical consultations to the CDC, WHO, GAVI, and vaccine manufacturers including Pfizer, Merck, and GSK. His research is funded by NIH/NIAID, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and the Connecticut Emerging Infection Program.
