Elena Michelini is Associate Professor of Structural Engineering at the Department of Engineering and Architecture, University of Parma, where she has been a faculty member since 2016, following a post-doctoral fellowship from 2008. She teaches core courses including Assessment of Structural Safety and Laboratory for Structure Design and Control across various degree programs in Civil Engineering and Architecture.
Research Interests: Her work spans nonlinear analysis of reinforced and prestressed concrete structures under extreme conditions (fire, seismic loads), seismic vulnerability of critical infrastructure, finite element modeling, and the development of sustainable construction materials such as alkali-activated concrete and autoclaved aerated masonry. She emphasizes performance-based assessment and digital tools for structural health monitoring.
Recent Research Trends: The 2024 publications highlight a dual focus: advancing structural safety of existing infrastructure (especially bridges and RC elements under corrosion and seismic stress) and innovating eco-friendly construction materials like geopolymer mortars and hydrophobic treatments for heritage conservation. Her work integrates computational modeling with experimental validation.
Scientific Awards:
- Department Award for Top-SNIP Publication (2015–2016)
- Winner, University Call for Research 2023 – Project REPARO
Grants and Projects: She leads and contributes to major research initiatives including PRIN 2022 (FAIL-SAFE), PNRR ECOSISTER (Spoke 1: Materials for Sustainability), DIGIBRIDGE (digital monitoring of bridges), CASA (sustainable concrete), and ReLUIS projects on seismic risk maps and bridge guidelines. She has also collaborated with the Italian Department of Civil Protection and the Regional Agency for Territorial Safety.
Professional Affiliations: Active member of fib Task Group 7.7 (Sustainable Concrete Masonry) and fib Task Group TG2.3 (Fire Design of Concrete Structures).
