Eleanor Spaventa is a Full Professor of European Union Law at Università Bocconi, where she directs the Bocconi Lab in European Studies (BLEST) and participates in the Institute for European Policymaking (IEP). She holds visiting roles at the College of Europe in Bruges and serves on the editorial board of the Common Market Law Review. Her academic journey includes positions at the University of Cambridge (2000-2004), University of Birmingham (2004-2006), and Durham University (2006-2018), where she became Professor of European Union Law and directed the Durham European Law Institute. She has held fellowships at the European University Institute and Durham's Institute of Advanced Studies.
Spaventa's research focuses on EU constitutional law, fundamental rights, Common Foreign and Security Policy, and internal market law. Her work has influenced policymakers and been cited by European Court of Justice Advocates General. Key areas include Brexit's legal impacts, union citizenship rights, and the Charter of Fundamental Rights' interpretation.
She has authored reports for the European Parliament and Commission, addressing petition rights and institutional competences. Her teaching spans European Union Law, international law topics, and PhD seminars.
