Edwin Todd Cowen is a Professor at Cornell University's College of Engineering, leading the DeFrees Hydraulics Laboratory and previously serving as the Marble Faculty Director for Energy at the Atkinson Center for Sustainability (2013–2018). He joined Cornell in 1997 after earning a B.S. from Brown University (1987), and M.S. and Ph.D. from Stanford University (1991, 1997), specializing in environmental fluid mechanics.
His research focuses on environmental fluid mechanics, renewable energy, and sustainability, combining lab experiments with field observations. Key areas include environmental transport processes, water wave dynamics, lake hydrodynamics, energy harvesting, and quantitative imaging. Current projects involve infrared remote sensing for fish transport tracking, optimizing energy turbine arrays, and carbon capture for biofuels.
Cowen collaborates with industry partners like Avangrid to develop smart energy storage systems and is involved in Cornell’s Earth Source Heat geothermal project. He has received prestigious awards including the Guggenheim Fellowship (2004) and NSF CAREER Award (2001). His work bridges academia and industry, emphasizing real-world sustainability solutions.
His research outputs span over 50 articles, with recent focuses on drone-based estuary flow measurements, turbine wake decay, and sediment transport dynamics. His labs and initiatives include the DeFrees Hydraulics Lab and the Energy Smart Community project, showcasing interdisciplinary innovation.
