Dr. Jillian Goldfarb is an Associate Professor in Biological and Environmental Engineering at Cornell University, affiliated with the Atkinson Center for a Sustainable Future and the Cornell Energy Systems Institute. Her research focuses on converting biomass into biofuels and sustainable materials while addressing environmental impacts. She holds a Ph.D. from Brown University (2008) and a B.S. from Northeastern University (2004).
Her work includes developing hydrothermal liquefaction techniques for biofuel production, designing carbon-based water treatment materials, and studying public engagement with renewable energy policies. Notable recognitions include the NSF CAREER Award (2022), a Fulbright Scholarship (2017), and the ACS Green Chemistry Rising Star Award (2017).
Teaching emphasizes active learning in courses like Engineering Processes for Environmental Sustainability and Public Facing Science. She leads Cornell’s ABET Reform initiative and chairs the ACS National Meeting on Sustainability. Her lab, EME2Lab, recently transitioned to the Chemical Engineering department. Key projects include the $1M NSF-funded Upstate 2.0 bioeconomy roadmap for Upstate New York.
Students advised include Zoe Pollard (PhD 2022), Andrew Hubble (PhD 2022), and James Adair (current). Collaborations span synthetic biology, archaeology, and policy analysis, reflecting interdisciplinary strengths.
