E. Edward Kawakami is an Associate Professor of Music and Director of Orchestral Activities at Carthage College. He holds a B.M. in Wind Performance from California State University, Northridge, an M.M. and Ph.D. in Music Education with an emphasis in Orchestral Conducting from Florida State University.
His research focuses on music perception/cognition and interpersonal skills in teaching/conducting environments. He has collaborated with notable figures like Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Ellen Taaffe Zwillich and Grammy winner Mark O’Connor. His conducting experience spans orchestras in Florida, California, and international ensembles like the Jünge Philharmonie Salzburg.
Prof. Kawakami has led the Tallahassee Youth Orchestras, Florida State University Campus Orchestra, and others. He has adjudicated festivals, conducted opera/ballet productions, and mentored students now active in professional music and education fields.
