Dr. Kenneth Thompson is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Music Education at Bowling Green State University (BGSU). He also serves as a conductor for the Detroit Symphony Orchestra’s Wu Family Academy, leading the DSO Civic Wind Symphony and CYE Philharmonic Orchestra. Thompson holds degrees from Limestone University (B.M. in Music Education and Trumpet), the University of Iowa (M.M. in Music Education and Ph.D. in Conducting). His career includes roles as Artistic Director of the Toledo Symphony Youth Orchestras and Associate Conductor of the St. Louis Wind Symphony.

Thompson is a scholar-performer advocating new music, with publications in journals like the Journal of the World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles and School Band and Orchestra Magazine. His awards include Grammy nominations and critical acclaim from Fanfare Magazine and Gramophone. Thompson’s research focuses on expanding wind and orchestral repertoire through commissions and recordings.

Thompson oversees BGSU’s wind ensembles, including the internationally recognized Wind Symphony. His leadership emphasizes innovation in music education and performance.
