Christopher Unger serves as Associate Professor of Music and Conductor of the Augustana Band and Augustana Orchestra at Augustana University, a role he assumed in September 2015 as the fifth conductor of the Augustana Band.
His educational background includes a DMA in Conducting from the Eastman School of Music (2013), an M.M. in Conducting from Western University (2010), and dual bachelor's degrees (B.M. and B.Ed.) from the University of British Columbia (2002–2003). Prior to Augustana, he held significant positions including interim director of bands at the University of British Columbia and assistant conductor of the Eastman Wind Orchestra and Wind Ensemble.
Dr. Unger's professional focus centers on wind ensemble conducting and orchestral performance, with deep expertise in music education developed through secondary and university-level teaching. His career demonstrates sustained engagement with national music festivals and competitions, including Musicfest Canada where his ensembles received national recognition.
His distinguished awards include:
- American Prize in Conducting (Wind Ensemble Division, 2013)
- Frederick Fennell Fellowship for Advanced Conducting Study
- Evan Whallon Conducting Award
- Walter Hagen Conducting Prize
Dr. Unger maintains active professional affiliations with the College Band Directors National Association, World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles, and Conductor’s Guild. His mentorship under renowned conductors—including Mark Scatterday, Colleen Richardson, Donald Hunsberger, and Frank Battisti—has shaped his approach to ensemble leadership. He currently directs the Augustana Band and Orchestra, continuing his commitment to musical excellence through performance and education.
