Dr. Edmund Hurst is a Lecturer in Creative Writing at the University of Hull, affiliated with the School of Humanities. He holds a BA (English Literature and Drama) from the University of East Anglia (2010–2013), an MA (Creative Writing) from the University of Hull (2013–2014), and a PhD (Creative Writing) from the University of Hull (2014–2018), focusing on Fantasy fiction and character tropes. His research interests span Fantasy, Science Fiction, Horror, Genre Writing, memory loss, and the psychological interplay between fictional characters and non-existence.
Teaching modules include Creative Writing Portfolio, Sci-Fi, Fantasy & Horror: Writing the Wondrous and the Weird, Writing the Novel, and Poetry, Performance and Play. Notable outputs include the novel Arx: City of Broken Minds (2024), the journal article Non Nova, Sed Nove (2023), and his thesis on Fantasy fiction tropes (2017). He is part of the Larkin Centre for Poetry and Creative Writing, contributing to the Cultural and Creative Industries research theme.
Hurst has collaborated with Hull-based charities to promote Creative Writing in secondary schools, bridging education and community engagement. His work often explores themes of memory and identity, with a focus on genre fiction's narrative structures.
