Sharla Yates is a Part-Time Lecturer in the Department of English at the University of Pittsburgh’s Kenneth P. Dietrich School of Arts & Sciences. She specializes in creative writing, with a focus on poetry, fiction, and non-fiction. Her teaching spans courses in fantasy/sci-fi genres, writing fundamentals, and editing.
Education: MFA in Creative Writing from Chatham University (2016), MA in Writing (Poetry) from Portland State University (2006), BA in Writing and Literature from George Fox University (2003).
Research & Writing: Yates explores themes of identity, memory, and environment through her creative works. Her chapbook What I Would Say if We Were to Drown Tonight (Stranded Oak Press, 2017) and essays like “Address” (Columbia Journal finalist, 2015) exemplify her lyrical style. She cohosts the Writers’ Bridge podcast on writing business and leads CRAFT TALKS workshops.
Publications & Recognition: Her work has appeared in Pittsburgh Post Gazette, Fifth Wednesday Journal, and Storychord. Awards include a Pushcart Prize nomination and multiple contest finalist placements. She is currently writing a young adult fantasy novel.
Teaching Contributions: Teaches over 15 courses, including ENG542 (The Editor), ENG533 (Fantasy/Sci-Fi Genres), and introductory writing workshops.
