Prof. Eddy Bauw is a Professor of Private Law and Legal Proceedings at Utrecht University’s Department of Law, serving as its Head since 2024. He leads research at the Molengraaff Institute for Private Law and the Montaigne Centre for the Rule of Law and Administration of Justice (2016–2024). His expertise spans liability law, judicial organization, and environmental law, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches. A deputy judge at The Hague Court of Appeal since 2013, he previously held roles like Director of the Judicial Council’s Strategy Division (until 2015) and professorships at the University of Amsterdam (2009–2018). His research explores how liability law and judicial practices contribute to societal needs, with projects addressing crisis impact on courts, algorithmic decision-making in law, and proximity justice systems.
Education: PhD (cum laude) in Private Law from the University of Amsterdam (1994), focusing on soil contamination liability. Career highlights include legislative roles at the Dutch Ministry of Justice (1993–2002) and early academic work at Amsterdam’s Centre for Environmental Law.
Research projects include investigating the Netherlands Commercial Court’s potential, judicial responses to the pandemic’s impact on vulnerable litigants, and comparative studies on liability frameworks for corporate environmental harm. His ancillary activities include advisory roles for Dutch courts and government bodies.
