Ed Steinmueller is a Professor of Information & Communication Technology Policy at the University of Sussex, affiliated with the Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU). He holds a BA from the University of Oregon and a PhD in Economics from Stanford University. His career includes roles at Stanford University’s Institute for Economic Policy Research, MERIT at Maastricht University, and SPRU since 1997. He co-founded the INK research group at SPRU and collaborates with the Deep Transitions Lab at Utrecht University.
Steinmueller’s research focuses on industrial economics of ICT industries, co-evolution of technology and organization, and long-term sustainability transitions. Key areas include integrated circuits, telecommunications, software, and the socio-economic impacts of digital technologies. He advises institutions like the European Commission, UK Department of Trade and Industry, and the National Academies of Science (US).
His grants include leadership in the Deep Transitions Lab funded by Baillie Gifford, and contributions to transformative innovation policy frameworks. Notable collaborations span sustainability investing, digital automation’s labor implications, and historical industrial evolution studies.
