Drew Todd Shindell serves as Nicholas Distinguished Professor of Earth Science at Duke University's Nicholas School of the Environment, with additional appointments as Affiliate of the Duke Global Health Institute (2017-present) and Associate of the Duke Initiative for Science & Society (2021-present). Prior to joining Duke in 2014, he spent nearly two decades at NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York City while teaching at Columbia University.
Dr. Shindell earned his Bachelor's degree in Physics from UC Berkeley (1988) and Ph.D. in Physics from Stony Brook University (1995). His research program bridges climate science, air quality, and policy development, with particular emphasis on identifying co-benefits of climate action for public health and economic development.
His scientific interests span multiple disciplines including climate modeling, atmospheric composition, policy analysis, and health impacts assessment. Dr. Shindell has pioneered research on short-lived climate pollutants and their disproportionate impacts on vulnerable populations, as well as the economic implications of climate mitigation strategies.
His recent publications (2024-2025) demonstrate continued leadership in carbon dioxide removal strategies, methane modeling, and aerosol-climate interactions, with focus on practical applications for policy development.
- National Academy of Sciences Member (2023)
- Fellow of the American Geophysical Union (2014)
- Highly Cited Researcher designation (2014)
- Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (2014)
- Atmospheric Sciences Section-Jule Charney Lecture (2012)
Dr. Shindell currently leads multiple research initiatives including Economic Assessment of Mitigation Measures of Short-Lived Climate Pollutants and Supporting SLCP Assessments on Food/Agriculture and Economics for the United Nations Environment Programme (2025-2026), as well as projects examining lithium mining environmental effects and NASA's GISS composition-climate model development. He maintains professional relationships with the Institute for Governance and Sustainable Development, Stockholm Environment Institute, and serves as a foreign expert for Shandong Province.
