Drew Shindell is the Nicholas Distinguished Professor of Earth Science at Duke University's Nicholas School of the Environment. Previously, he held positions at NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies and Columbia University. His expertise spans climate change, air quality, and policy linkages. Shindell earned a B.A. in Physics from UC Berkeley and a Ph.D. in Physics from Stony Brook University.
His research focuses on mitigating climate impacts through interdisciplinary approaches, including ozone depletion, methane emissions, and short-lived climate pollutants. He has authored over 250 peer-reviewed papers, testified before Congress, and contributed to major IPCC reports. Awards include recognition from Scientific American, NASA, NSF, and EPA. He chairs the Climate and Clean Air Coalition’s Scientific Advisory Panel and co-authored the UNEP/WMO Black Carbon Assessment.
Recent grants address topics like SLCP mitigation in agriculture, lithium mining environmental effects, and climate-health co-benefits. Shindell’s work emphasizes policy-relevant science, such as quantifying air quality improvements from climate policies and modeling labor losses due to extreme heat.
- Awards: AGU and AAAS Fellowships, U.S. Congressional Testimony, UNEP/WMO Leadership
