Dr. Drew Lyon is a Professor and Endowed Chair in Small Grains Extension and Weed Science at Washington State University (WSU), affiliated with the College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences (CAHNRS). His research focuses on integrated weed management in dryland small grain production, targeting problematic weeds like downy brome, jointed goatgrass, and Russian thistle. He emphasizes herbicide resistance mitigation and sustainable practices combining cultural and chemical controls. Lyon leads WSU’s Dryland Cropping Systems Team, developing the Wheat and Small Grains Website and hosting the WSU Wheat Beat Podcast. He also manages the Weeders of the West blog, collaborating with PNW weed scientists. His work spans field trials, Extension outreach, and interdisciplinary projects addressing cropping system challenges in the Inland Pacific Northwest.
Education: PhD in Agronomy/Weed Science (University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 1988), M.S. in Agronomy (1985), B.S. in Agronomy/Crop Protection (University of Illinois, 1980).
Research highlights include herbicide efficacy studies, harvest weed seed control, and managing herbicide-resistant weeds. He collaborates with USDA-ARS scientists and industry partners to advance practical solutions for growers. Recent projects address seed dispersal patterns of Russian thistle and glyphosate’s role in controlling smooth scouringrush.
Grants and advising: While no specific grants are listed, his Extension role involves securing and distributing federal/state funding for applied research. No advisee names are provided in the text.
Labs/Teams: Active in CAHNRS research networks and the PNW Weed Science community, contributing to regional agricultural resilience strategies.
