Judit Barroso serves as an Associate Professor at Oregon State University's Columbia Basin Agricultural Research Center (CBARC), where she develops and leads research and outreach programs focused on integrated weed management in wheat-based production systems of eastern Oregon. Her work emphasizes chemical, cultural, and mechanical weed control approaches for dryland cropping systems, with particular attention to fallow-based systems. She is affiliated with the Department of Crop and Soil Science within the College of Agricultural Sciences.
Dr. Barroso received her educational foundation in Spain, earning a B.S. in Agricultural Engineering and a Ph.D. in Weed Ecology from the Polytechnic University of Madrid. Her academic journey includes prestigious fellowships such as the Fulbright Fellowship (2010-2012), JAEDoc from the Spanish National Research Council (2009), and the Juan de la Cierva award from the Spanish Government (2006).
Her research program centers on weed management challenges in Pacific Northwest dryland agriculture, with particular expertise in herbicide resistance, precision agriculture applications for weed control, and sustainable management of problematic weeds like Russian thistle, downy brome, and feral rye. She has pioneered work in harvest weed seed control, optical sensing for weed detection, and alternative herbicide strategies to combat glyphosate resistance. Her research integrates field studies with economic analysis to develop practical, economically viable solutions for farmers.
Analysis of Dr. Barroso's recent publications reveals a strong focus on herbicide resistance mechanisms and management strategies, particularly for problematic grass weeds in dryland wheat systems. Her work spans molecular studies of resistance mechanisms, field evaluations of control methods, and economic assessments of management approaches. The research shows increasing emphasis on integrated approaches that combine chemical, cultural, and mechanical methods to address the growing challenge of herbicide-resistant weeds in the region.

Dr. Barroso leads the Resilient Dryland Farming Alliance (RDFA), a grower-led initiative evaluating alternative crops and cover cropping systems to enhance sustainability in wheat-fallow rotations. She collaborates extensively with researchers across institutions on herbicide resistance tracking and management, including the PNWHRI: Pacific Northwest Herbicide Resistant Tracking Website. Her extension work is highly impactful, with numerous publications in the PNW Weed Management Handbook and outreach through field days, workshops, and the Weeders of the West Blog.
Based at the Columbia Basin Agricultural Research Center near Adams, Oregon, Dr. Barroso works closely with the Western Society of Weed Science and the Oregon Society of Weed Science. She leads research on herbicide resistance in key weed species and develops practical management strategies for growers facing increasing challenges with glyphosate-resistant weeds. Her work bridges fundamental research on resistance mechanisms with applied field studies to provide timely solutions for Pacific Northwest agriculture.
