Eugene Fuerst is a Professor at Washington State University (WSU) within the College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences (CAHNRS). His research focuses on biochemical and molecular mechanisms in seed defenses, wheat quality, and weed management. He has led significant grants on seed decay mechanisms and durum wheat improvement.
Education:
- B.S., Plant Science, Cornell University, 1976
- M.S., Weed Science & Biochemistry, North Dakota State University, 1979
- Ph.D., Weed Science & Herbicide Resistance Mechanisms, Michigan State University, 1984
Research Interests: Dr. Fuerst investigates seed defenses against decay fungi, wheat quality enhancement, and untapped potential of durum wheat. He explores how seed phenolic compounds and biochemical pathways influence crop resilience and nutritional value. His work bridges fundamental science with practical applications in agriculture, such as improving weed management and enhancing grain quality.
Grants & Collaborations:
- Lead PI: 'Biochemical and Molecular Mechanisms of Resistance to Decay in Weed Seeds' (USDANIFA, 2014)
- Co-PI: 'Soft Kernel Durum Wheat: Removing Culinary Constraints' (USDANIFA, 2014)
Advising & Labs: While no advisees are explicitly listed, Dr. Fuerst collaborates extensively with colleagues on interdisciplinary projects, including mouse models for grain preference studies and organic farming transitions.
Labs/Teams: Engages with WSU’s crop science and plant pathology teams, contributing to research on seed biology and agricultural sustainability.
