Douglas K. Owens is the Henry J. Kaiser, Jr. Professor and Chair of the Department of Health Policy in Stanford University's School of Medicine, as well as a Senior Fellow at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies. He holds a courtesy appointment as a Professor of Management Science and Engineering. His roles include Director of the Center for Health Policy and the Center for Primary Care and Outcomes Research. Owens is a general internist with expertise in clinical decision-making, cost-effectiveness analysis, and guideline development.
Education: BS and MS from Stanford University; MD from UCSF. Completed residency at the University of Pennsylvania and a fellowship in health research and policy at Stanford.
Research focuses on evaluating interventions for HIV/AIDS, cardiovascular disease, hepatitis C, opioid use disorder, and cancer screening. He has led national guidelines on preventive care and chairs the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force. His work emphasizes equity and cost-effectiveness in healthcare policies.
Notable awards include the MERIT Award from NIH (2019–2029), Henry J. Kaiser Professorship (2011), and the Eisenberg Award for Leadership in Medical Decision Making (2010). He has directed training programs in health services research and currently co-leads the Stanford-AHRQ Fellowship Program in Health Policy.
