Joshua Salomon is a Professor of Health Policy in the Department of Health Policy at Stanford University School of Medicine and a Senior Fellow at the Center for Health Policy in the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies. He serves as the Director of the Prevention Policy Modeling Lab and as Associate Chair for Academic Affairs and Strategy in the Department of Health Policy.
Dr. Salomon's research focuses on priority-setting in global health, with three main substantive areas: (1) measurement and valuation of health outcomes; (2) modeling patterns and trends in major causes of global mortality and disease burden; and (3) evaluation of health interventions and policies. His work combines data synthesis and mathematical modeling to measure and forecast health outcomes and evaluate public health programs, with particular emphasis on infectious diseases including HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, viral hepatitis, and COVID-19.
Analysis of Dr. Salomon's recent publications reveals a strong focus on modeling approaches to address critical public health challenges, particularly in infectious disease control. His work spans hepatitis B and C, tuberculosis, gonorrhea, and other sexually transmitted infections, with consistent application of cost-effectiveness analysis and mathematical modeling to inform policy decisions. A notable trend is the increasing focus on health disparities, particularly racial and ethnic disparities in tuberculosis outcomes, and the application of modeling to understand the impact of policy decisions on vulnerable populations.
Dr. Salomon has established the Prevention Policy Modeling Lab, which conducts health and economic modeling to guide public health decision-making relating to infectious disease. He has co-authored more than three hundred original peer-reviewed research articles and mentored numerous graduate and post-graduate trainees in health policy, medicine, and public health. Prior to joining Stanford, he served as a policy analyst at the World Health Organization and as Professor of Global Health at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
