Marissa Reitsma is an Assistant Professor of Health Policy at Stanford University School of Medicine. She completed her PhD in Health Policy at Stanford in 2024 as a Knight-Hennessy Scholar, Stanford Data Science Scholar, and NSF Graduate Research Fellow. Prior to her PhD, she worked for five years at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) on the Global Burden of Disease study focusing on obesity, smoking, alcohol, and drug use impacts. Her academic journey began with a Biology bachelor's degree from Brown University.
Her research focuses on developing computational models to address health inequities through:
- Quantifying disease burden across populations
- Evaluating cost-effectiveness of public health interventions
- Analyzing syndemic conditions and social determinants
- Integrating multimodal data for health policy decisions
Recent article trends show expertise in infectious disease modeling (hepatitis C, gonorrhea) and pandemic response analysis (multiple high-impact studies on COVID-19 disparities, transmission dynamics, and vaccination equity). She has contributed to policy discussions around prescription drug rebates and Medicare price negotiations.
Scientific contributions include:
- Global Burden of Disease methodology
- Disparities mapping at subcounty levels
- Computational modeling for disease elimination
- Real-time pandemic surveillance systems
