Doug Friesen is an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Music Education at Queen's University. He holds a PhD from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE), MMus from the University of Toronto, BMus and BEd from Brandon University, and is certified by the Ontario College of Teachers. His work bridges music education, sound studies, and community engagement.
With over 20 years of experience, Friesen has served as a classroom teacher, consultant, and post-secondary instructor. His research focuses on sound-based pedagogies and collaborative inquiry, emphasizing creativity and community-building through listening practices. He has collaborated with organizations like the National Arts Centre, Toronto Symphony Orchestra, and Massey Hall/Roy Thomson Hall.
Friesen's professional practice combines music performance (touring with notable artists) with educational advocacy. His ancestral background as a settler on Treaty 1 territory informs his commitment to decolonial pedagogical approaches in music education.
