Ken MacDonald serves as an MPS instructor of French horn at the Desautels Faculty of Music, University of Manitoba, while maintaining an active orchestral career as Associate Principal horn of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. His extensive performance history includes principal horn positions with the Hamilton Philharmonic (seventeen seasons), Symphony Nova Scotia, and Vancouver Opera Orchestra, alongside guest appearances with major ensembles including the Vancouver Symphony, Canadian Opera Company, and Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony.
His research focuses on integrated holistic teaching methodologies in music education, informed by his certification as a Trainer with the Focusing Institute in New York. MacDonald develops national workshops on holistic pedagogy and partners with the Winnipeg Symphony to deliver educational programs in northern Manitoba communities through the National Arts Centre's Teaching Artist initiative, collaborating with composer Andrew Balfour.
As a chamber musician, he maintains longstanding affiliations with Ontario's Festival of the Sound and the national touring ensemble Octagon. His solo career features performances with the Winnipeg Symphony, Manitoba Chamber Orchestra, and CBC broadcasts of commissioned works. MacDonald actively mentors emerging musicians through roles as National Academy Orchestra Mentor and Glenn Gould School adjudicator, while extending his teaching to McMaster University, Hillfield-Strathallan College, and masterclasses at University of Toronto and Brandon University.
